The Kentucky Derby is the place to be the first Saturday in May. Some of the best three year old colts will be running for the roses. Every year the preps for the derby get tougher and tougher. To get tickets is somewhat tough because they usually sell out immediately. You can usually go to a ticket broker to obtain these hard copy tickets. The purse is one million dollars with sixty percent going to the winner. The first place horse usually will go to stud somewhere earning the owners a hefty sum the rest of their lives. You can purchase a package deal for both racing days this will save you money. Usually the patron will attend both days of racing.

     The trainers put in quite a bit of time preparing for the Kentucky Derby. Horse auctions are spread around the country and the world. Fasig Tipton is the auction where the big names of the business turn out searching for the next triple crown winner. The second leg is the preakness stakes where the most expensive trophy in all of sports is presented to the winner. The third and final leg is the belmont stakes. This is what makes a champion. Three races separated by a one week layoff is virtually impossible to do. The last triple crown winner was affirmed in 1978. There are no living triple crown champions, the last being Seattle slew. Steve Cauthen is the youngest jockey to win the derby he was 18 years old. Forty five horses have come close winning the first two legs of the triple crown. All foals that are colts are supplemented at birth to the Derby, after they become yearlings only a handful will still be made eligible. A supplemental payment must accompany each horse three times a year which can be very expensive just to be able to run in the race. This goes for the Kentucky Oaks as well.
