All about Waynesville North Carolina

Located in Haywood County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Waynesville is a city rich in history, scenery, and culture and a great place to vacation or raise a family.

Waynesville is the oldest town in Haywood County, and is very close to many exciting outdoor activities. Activities include hiking, rafting, kayaking, world class fly-fishing, and the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. Waynesville is nestled between the Pisgah National Forest and the Smoky Mountain National Park. Waynesville is also renowned for superb mountain golfing, with several clubs and courses to choose from. You will enjoy teeing off on some of the most beautiful fairways in Western North Carolina with breathtaking mountain views.

Downtown Waynesville maintains its classic charm, with most of the shops now containing art galleries, restaurants, cafes, and municipal buildings. The Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts is also housed downtown n Waynesville. A couple blocks from downtown proper is an area called “Frog Level”, which also contains a coffee shop, some tradesmen, and artist galleries. This area used to be considered the “seedy” part of town, but is now a quaint eclectic sub-neighborhood of downtown Waynesville.

You can also enjoy a surprisingly diverse nightlife with dancing, live music from bluegrass to blues, and very active local theater productions. Annually there is the Folkmoot USA festival with attracts entertainers and performers worldwide.

In the past, people would have to drive to nearby Asheville to visit any large retailers or shopping malls. Yet over the last few years Waynesville has seen several large big box retailers move to the area, including Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, and others. This has been in part to the amount of growth in the area, and these large retailers have been tastefully added to the city so as not to disturb the historic downtown beauty and vibe of the area.

Waynesville real estate is also a hot item. There are a few gated communities in the area, primarily occupied by vacation homes and several permanent residents. Going a half mile or so out of town you are immediately transported to vintage old rural Western North Carolina, with farms, and large parcels of property with large beautiful Waynesville homes.

The beauty of Waynesville, NC and surrounding Haywood County is unmatched, and has been the backdrop for many novels and movies, including the renowned “Cold Mountain” by James Frazier which was also made into a blockbuster movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Nicole Kidman. Nearby is also Deep Creek which is a campground and river rafting Mecca, as well as a gateway to many great hiking trails and backpacking excursions. If you are someone who enjoy fall colors, Waynesville and Haywood County has some of the most pristine beautiful mountain ranges available for autumn viewing.
