Hyundai’s Blue Link Equals Ultimate Connectivity
As Hyundai debuts Blue Link®, a subscription based service, at CES 2011, the car manufacturer revealed a highly interactive and informative system that will fuel the technological advancements of connecting drivers with help and information. GPS, smartphone connectivity, remote car signaling, weather information and hands-free communications are just a few of the 30-plus options and applications offered by Blue Link. Hyundai’s new integrated technology takes car connectivity to another platform.
Michael Deitz, National Manager for Hyundai’s Connected Car Division which operates Blue Link, said, “We’ve recognized that not every consumer has the preference to speak with a live operator. Therefore, we’ve taken that feedback and developed a voice recognition technology and service that coincides with giving the driver the ability to ask a question, and for operators to deliver the answers back through a voice automated system.”
Hyundai’s fast rising market share thus far has been attributed to many factors, one of them being the Hyundai Assurance program – dubbed America’s best warranty, roadside assistance, and buyer protection in case of job loss. Now, enter Blue Link. Its database of knowledge and ability to share information in real time provides drivers such information as the vehicle’s current location, shortcuts to the end destination along with area points of interest, gas station prices, and restaurant suggestions that include its review. The brain behind Blue Link can even self-diagnose vehicle problems and instantly notify the proper personnel, both emergency and familial, in the case of an accident.
With convenient forms of communications, Blue Link never neglects the ultimate purpose of advanced technology in vehicles, and that’s for the protection and safety of its driver and their passengers. Automated Crash Notification (ACN), SOS Emergency Assistance, and Stolen Vehicle Recovery are features that aid in helping drivers in the case of an accident or emergency. When airbags deploy, Blue Link assures that a trained specialist is already attempting to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants. SOS Emergency Assistance is accessed through a dedicated single button that when pushed, yields a trained response specialist to arrange 911 assistance.
While the standard remote lock, unlock, and vehicle start functions have long been established, Blue Link allows drivers to have these features from any range. The accessibility of these functions integrates the three most convenient ways that people communicate: via phone with a toll-free call, via an app on a smartphone, or via the Blue Link Owner’s website.
As the no-texting while driving movement has gained momentum during the past year, Blue Link addresses and solves this dangerously distracting behavior by offering a hands-free voice activated texting feature. A one-button push feature, Blue Link takes the driver’s verbal dictation and composes the message before sending it to the proper contact.
Blue Link is offered through three levels of packaging. Beginning with the Assurance Package, it encompasses ACN, SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, and a Monthly Vehicle Report. Stepping up to a more robust package is the Blue Link Essentials. This package adds the remote access features with convenient communication sharing such as alarm notification, location sharing, and voice-to-text messaging. The Essentials also includes an automated diagnostic trouble code notification as well as a maintenance alert. Blue Link is technology that enhances the safety of drivers while also enhancing the safety and protection of a vehicle investment. Its theft protection speeds up stolen vehicle recovery while providing stolen vehicle slowdown and vehicle immobilization. Another unique feature included in the Essentials package is the boundary limiting options. Comprising of Valet Alert, Geo-Fence, Speed Alert, and Curfew Alert, Blue Link automatically notifies the vehicle owner of unacceptable use as determined by the boundaries set forth including geographical and time restrictions.
Lastly, the Blue Link Guidance package furthers a car’s ability to become an information hub by offering GPS that also provides turn-by-turn voice navigation, points-of-interest alerts, points-of-interest web search, traffic conditions, restaurant locations and reviews, as well as traffic conditions among other features. The Eco-Coach feature, considered by Hyundai, to be its breakthrough technology, is comprised of a scoring system which gauges the eco-friendliness of a driver’s habits. To further Hyundai’s eco-friendly efforts, the coach offers drivers ways to improve their mileage efficiency and C02 emissions based on the system results.
To be available this year in the 2012 Hyundai Sonata model, Blue Link is a creation that furthers the efficiency of communications. The need for information to be available and accessible in an instantaneous manner is the driving force that propels this new technology to the forefront of any in-car connectivity device. In looking towards Hyundai’s future innovations and developments, Deitz said, “We’re not standing still. We continue to have that product cadence in moving forward. We’ve displayed many new concepts at CES and with the feedback from the market, we are then able to further develop the concepts that will work best.”
